First, the idea was to cycle from North to South through South-America. However, four different reasons made us decide to change the plans:

  1. Starting in the south (i.e. Chili and Argentina) will give us the opportunity to cycle from more civilized to more rural areas.

  2. As can be seen in the climate table on the bottom of this page, it is easier to follow the best seasons (without to much rain) when cycling from south to north.

  3. The WIND is mainly blowing from the west / south-west. This holds especially in Patagonia, the south part of Argentina and Chile: the winds can blow up to 100 km/h over there.

  4. After one year we can continue our journey more to the north. But if we decide to stop then we have seen the most interesting part of America.

Our planned route is drawn on this map. We will fly to Buenos Aires, travel by bus the Rio Gallegos and start cycling from Patagonia via Bolivia and Peru to Ecuador. The time schedule is depicted in the climate table. The schedule is based for a large part on the weather (i.e. the temperature and the rain fall). Their should be time enough to see a lot of things and do many hiking trails.

The next table shows for each country the temperature (in degrees Celsius) and the amount of rainfall (in mm/month). The data is obtained from the internet and from the climate sheets of IAMAT.

Legend
wet: more than 100 mm rain per month
hot: more than 25 degrees Celsius
cold: less than 10 degrees Celsius
